Olsen double

Norwegian owner Fred Olsen has splashed $320m on two new wind turbine installation ships.

The Fred. Olsen Windcarrier unit has signed on at Lamprell Energy for the $160m vessels, with two options attached.

The ships will be built at the Jebel Ali yard in Dubai for delivery in the second and third quarters of 2012.

They will also be used for equipment transport.

Information drawn from the market indicates that between 15 and 20 such vessels will be needed by 2015 and 25 to 30 by 2020.
